This course is designed to consider the models of attachment theory starting with Bowlby, Lorenz and Ainsworth and then progressing to the ABC model. Participants will consider how young people experience attachment issues and how these impact upon them as children and through their adult life.

This course will aim to assist carers to gain an understanding of the complexities and challenges associated with Unaccompanied Child Asylum Seekers. Reflecting on legislation, personal stories and factual data, the course aims to identify and explore the issues currently faced by young people, foster carers and professionals. Participants will cover areas of social and cultural isolation faced by young people who have been displaced from their country of birth and their families, whilst exploring the issues faced by carers and the young people as they approach adulthood.

This course has been developed to provide learners with knowledge of Hoarding as a disorder and the complex impacts of self-neglect as a safeguarding category. In addition, self-neglect will be explored considering the difference between self-neglect and a lifestyle choice and how best to encourage a mutual plan in order to work towards better outcomes. This course is delivered using a range of methods and resources including: Case studies, group discussions, small group activities and DVD clips.

The course will consider the importance of creating a quality environment for children and young people who are placed in the care setting. Research indicates that moving into care is a critical time for individuals whilst recognising that they have already come from an emotionally challenging and complex environment. Participants will consider what is means to look after children in ways that keeps them free from harm and places their carers above suspicion from allegations of abuse. The course recognises the strengths of person centred planning and relationship building utilising the Social Pedagogic principles. In order to develop effective relationships a practitioner needs to understand behaviours which are expressed due to attachment issues and grief. This course is designed to help learners describe the safe procedures for handling medicines, demonstrate how to administer medicines safely and effectively, explain how to use and maintain medicine records, recognise potential problems of medicines in use and how to avoid/overcome them.

Consideration is given to what happens when consent is not met, and how the capacity act and the principle of best interest informs professional decision making.
