Reading – 1 hour: This exam will consist of 15 questions that are a variety of multiple choice, fixed short answer and short open response questions. The delegate will be presented with realistic scenarios in source documents that they will then be asked to refer to and answer questions about. They will be asked at least two questions that ask to compare the information in both documents.

The exam will be graded as a whole and will be awarded as either a pass or a fail. Delegates are allowed a dictionary. No other materials are allowed in the exam.

Writing - 1 hour 20 minutes: This exam consists of 2 questions, where delegates will be expected to write approximately 250-300 words for each. They will be assessed on your understanding of different types of text and writing for different audiences and purpose.

Responses will be marked under two categories:

  • Composition (55% of the available marks)
  • Spelling, punctuation and grammar (45% of available marks)
  • Speaking, Listening and Communication – 30 minutes: This assessment has three separate activities:

  • A formal discussion on an unfamiliar topic: The topic will be given approximately one week prior to the assessment. We recommend roughly 1 hour preparation time, this is to get notes and research together (these can be taken these in with them) not to memorise everything they can- 10-15 minutes
  • A presentation/extended explanation on a familiar topic: This is where they are conveying information to a group of people. The topic could be to inform or persuade listeners 5-7 minutes
  • Discussion in response to another person’s presentation/extended explanation or recorded presentation: This is where they can show their ability to ask questions, confirm information they have learnt and to convey their own thoughts and opinions on another topic
