Overview

To enable participants to take a structured approach to writing effective reports which are concise, easy to read, achieve their purpose and are appropriate for the intended audience.

Learning

    By the end of this workshop delegates will be able to:

  • Demonstrate how to adapt reports according to their audience and their needs
  • Write reports which are accurate, meaningful, factual and support decision making
  • Identify the ?what, who, why? when writing reports
  • Outline the purpose of the report and structuring it, with appropriate analysis, in order to meet the writer?s aims
  • Identify the critical parts required in a report and how they fit together
  • Construct compelling written arguments
  • Identify what is appropriate for appendices and annexes
  • Write without ambiguity
  • Outline the importance of using plain English
  • Outline the importance of correct grammar and punctuation
  • Outline the importance of proofreading and demonstrate a staged approach

Assessment

Qualitative assessment by tutor (For example: observations or demonstrations throughout course) Pre work: A short reflection and piece of research is required and will be discussed during the session:

Consider:

What are your strengths in report writing?

What are your challenges?

What specifically do you want from the event?

Research:

What are some of the types of report written in your part of the organisation?

Compare at least two and identify similarities and differences.

Find two reports by different authors (one can be own!) ? for use in session four
