Secondary roost surveys for arborists
Course code: LA-CAT-075
This follow-on Lantra course teaches participants how to undertake a secondary roost survey including use of an endoscope. You will explore in more depth the practical skills needed in the field, the methods that can be used to rule out the potential of features as suitable bat roosts, learn the appropriate use of endoscopes and be given guidance on what can and cannot be done without a bat licence.
This course is in line with the British Standard 8596 – Surveying for bats in trees and woodland.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Describe the basic ecology of British bats and their use of trees
- Recognise potential roost features in trees
- Outline the practical and legal limits of endoscope use, including distinguishing between use under the JNCC approached method statement and endoscope use which requires a licence
- Demonstrate appropriate use of an endoscope to rule out the suitability of features as potential bat roosts when other less invasive methods are not possible
- Record and report their findings
- Know when to get an expert involved
